Fumani Walter Maluleke (b. 1991, Limpopo, South Africa) is a contemporary visual artist whose work has rapidly gained international recognition for its unique use of traditional Tsonga grass mats (xitheve) as a painting surface.
Born and raised in the rural village of Thomo, Giyani, Maluleke’s artistic journey began in childhood, sketching on schoolbook margins and on the walls of family homes. His early passion led him to formal training at Artist Proof Studio in Johannesburg, followed by a diploma in Art & Graphic Design from Tshwane North TVET College, where he later taught high school art.
Maluleke’s signature medium painting on woven grass mats emerged accidentally when paint spilled onto a mat. The texture inspired him to explore the material further, and the practice became deeply personal when his grandmother revealed that he was born on a grass mat due to limited medical access in their village.
This revelation transformed the mat into a symbolic foundation of his artistic identity, merging cultural heritage with contemporary visual storytelling.
His work documents rural South African life with sensitivity and anthropological depth: pastoral landscapes, communal scenes, childhood memories, and Tsonga cultural motifs.
The grass mat becomes both canvas and metaphor representing home, tradition, resilience, and the overlooked material culture of South African households.
Maluleke has exhibited widely across South Africa and internationally.
His recent milestone was becoming the only Black artist among 100 international exhibitors at Art Central Hong Kong 2025, where his works were highly sought after by collectors, particularly from Singapore. His solo exhibitions include “Tsalwa: The Materiality of Stories” at UNISA Art Gallery (2024) and “Underneath the African Sky” at CIRCA Gallery Johannesburg (2024).
His works have also been featured at Turbine Art Fair, Everard Read Gallery, and multiple contemporary art spaces.
Today, Fumani Maluleke stands as one of South Africa’s most compelling emerging voices—an artist who transforms humble materials into powerful narratives of identity, memory, and place.
